Thanks to their wide variety of habitats, and despite the alternating harsh conditions of floods and droughts, our rivers are home to a great wealth of animal and plant life.<\/p>\n\n

Adapted to the wide variations in water levels, species characteristic of dry environments alternate with wetland species.<\/p>\n\n

Many are protected and qualify as bioindicators: the presence of these particularly demanding and\/or fragile species bears witness to a high-quality aquatic environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The best known are: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

iconic mammals such as European otters<\/strong> and beavers<\/strong>, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

amphibians, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

aquatic insects, whose larvae provide food for fish, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

snakes such as the viperine water snake<\/strong>, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

birds, including birds of prey (kingfisher, white-throated dipper, Egyptian vulture and Bonelli’s eagle\u2026)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to fish, we find brown trout<\/strong>, of course, but also Mediterranean barbel<\/strong>, well-adapted to low water levels, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and Zingel asper<\/strong>, a small endemic fish threatened with extinction, with the only individuals remaining in the world found in the Ard\u00e8che, Durance, Dr\u00f4me and Doubs basins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Migrators such as river herring and eels<\/strong> swim up our rivers to reproduce or grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ecological richness also provides a number of services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you know, for example, that riverside trees, sand and pebbles all contribute actively to good water quality? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By filtering the water and consuming organic matter, they supplement and finish the work of water treatment plants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trees also help to regulate water and air temperatures<\/strong> with the shade of their leaves and through evapotranspiration.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

All these animal and plant species interact with each other, within or around the river.<\/p>\n\n

BATHING IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So let’s remember that if the rivers of the Ard\u00e8che basin are so attractive, it’s because they are rich, well-preserved natural environments.<\/p>

Thousands of people visit these sites every summer: respect the river and help to preserve it!<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
