However, as toxicity cannot be detected with the naked eye, it is important to know what to do to stay safe.<\/p>\n\n<p>    <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/qualite.ardeche-eau.fr\/app\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Floc-2_cornillon18-07-22-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Floc_cyanobacterie\" class=\"wp-image-8125 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/qualite.ardeche-eau.fr\/app\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Floc-2_cornillon18-07-22-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/qualite.ardeche-eau.fr\/app\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Floc-2_cornillon18-07-22-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/qualite.ardeche-eau.fr\/app\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Floc-2_cornillon18-07-22-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/qualite.ardeche-eau.fr\/app\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Floc-2_cornillon18-07-22-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/qualite.ardeche-eau.fr\/app\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Floc-2_cornillon18-07-22-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In rivers, it is the benthic forms of cyanobacteria that may be present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They develop in the form of a &#8220;biofilm&#8221; adhering to a surface (pebbles, sticks etc.). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When they die, they become detached and form &#8220;flocs&#8221; (accumulations on the surface of the water \u2013 see photo), which can build up in slow-moving or stagnant areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Toxicity only occurs if the biofilm or floc is ingested<\/strong>, which is why pets and young children are more at risk, as they are more likely to put pebbles or sticks coated with biofilm in their mouths or to ingest flocs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<p>    <\/p>\n\n<h2><strong>Are they present in our rivers?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Proliferations of cyanobacteria are possible in our rivers, but they remain rare and very localised: the areas where biofilm is produced or flocs accumulate can be concentrated in a few square metres.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As benthic cyanobacteria have a very low concentration in the water, we do not look for these organisms and their potential toxins when analysing the &#8220;bathing quality&#8221; of river water.
